General Guidelines for Floor Wardens.
In the event of an emergency, the WHOLE building should be evacuated, even though the danger may be confined to one floor or area. Remember, the greatest danger to staff & students is smoke.
Persons who are being evacuated may take personal belongings, handbags/briefcases/instruments etc, but only those things that they can quickly grab. Use a combination of common sense and speed- the primary danger is from smoke or fumes inhalation.
If a person refuses to leave, even after warning them of the danger of remaining, do NOT force the issue but proceed with the rest of the evacuation and REPORT TO the Building Emergency Controller when you return to them. He/she will notify the Fire Brigade of persons remaining in the building when they arrive, and they will assess the situation and remove the person if required.
ASSEMBLY POINT for all evacuated persons is the GRASS AREA TO THE REAR OF THE GRAINGER MUSEUM.
- EVACUATION ROUTE SIGNS are posted throughout the building.
- EVACUATION ROUTES from the building are by the SHORTEST PATH TO AN EXTERNAL DOOR. Persons should then move around the OUTSIDE of the building to the ASSEMBLY POINT, so they may be accounted for.
- MELBA HALL GROUND FLOOR EVACUATION ROUTE is the way they came in, out the Front Door. IT IS UNSAFE TO EVACUATE THROUGH THE SOUTH DOOR onto the drive where the Fire Trucks will arrive.
