740-184 Shakuhachi
Learn to play this exquisite and subtle bamboo Japanese flute! Andrew MacGregor is one of a small number of shakuhachi players selected to appear in the finals of the 2003 all-Japan National Music (Hõgaku) Competition (for Traditional instruments). He has released numerous CDs of traditional hogaku (Zen-based) repertoire for shakuhachi, as well as collaborative works with Japanese and Australian artists.
This subject is open to all students and in particular to absolute beginners.
Students will receive tuition in the traditional Japanese pedagogical style. Classes will cover the history and construction of the shakuhachi, breathing, blowing and fingering techniques and the different notation systems. The repertoire studied includes folk songs and Zen meditation pieces (Hõgaku).
This subject runs every Tuesday, 9.00–11.00 am.
