Do I need to audition?
Auditions are required for Orchestra, Chamber Players and Melbourne Big Band. You can still enrol in these subjects on the basis of the recommended performance standard, but confirmation of enrolment will be conditional on successful audition. Auditions are held prior to the start of each semester. If you’ve enrolled in an auditioned ensemble, you’ll need to complete an Application for Audition (PDF, 46Kb).
Audition requirements: Auditions will run for 10 minutes and warm-up rooms will be available to you prior your audition time. You are asked to prepare:
Orchestra and Chamber Players: 2 contrasting pieces of standard repertoire or 2 orchestral excerpts. No accompanist required. (You can be considered for both ensembles from one audition.)
Melbourne Big Band: 2 contrasting pieces. You may use recorded accompaniment to improvise, if you wish.
Applicants should note that the audition panel will only hear part of the selected repertoire and may also ask for a demonstration of technical work (scales, arpeggios, etc) and sight reading. If you have concerns about your audition program, please email the Ensemble Coordinator, Ian Godfrey, at ibg@unimelb.edu.au
Audition outcomes will be notified via email before the start of semester.
