Breadth Studies

The Melbourne Model aims to produce graduates who are trained in a particular discipline (depth) as well as knowledgeable across disciplines (breadth). The breadth component of the new degrees aims to build multiple competencies in students by exposing them to different ways of knowing through cross-disciplinary learning and teaching.

The breadth component of the New Generation degrees means all students can include music in their Melbourne experience.

In studying music, you acquire a range of skills, knowledge and experiences that will complement your studies and enhance your future career. Through music, you can expand your cultural horizons, nurture your creative skills and build networks and friendships that will last a lifetime. The on-line Handbook contains more information about Breadth Subjects.

Breadth Subjects

The Faculty of Music offers a wide variety of Breadth subjects, catering for all levels of musical background, from the complete beginner to the experienced musician. Subjects are available across a wide range of musical disciplines such as ensemble performance, introductory music studies, music language and the history and social context of music.

While one-to-one tuition in music performance or composition is not available through breadth studies, performance opportunities do exist through ensemble subject options. You can choose single subjects at each year level or follow a recommended sequence throughout your course.  Your current level of musical background will determine which music subjects are most appropriate for you.
