Close Encounters with Music in Melbourne
Close Encounters with Music in Melbourne will explore the formal concert culture of the Western classical tradition as it is currently practised in Melbourne. Students will be introduced to different styles of concert and theatre music, like symphony and opera, choral, chamber and ballet music, through engagement with live local events. In addition to the weekly lecture and tutorial, students will have the opportunity to attend up to four performances and/or dress rehearsals as arranged by the course co-ordinator. (Any cost associated with this attendance will be covered by the purchase price of the reader; further information will be available by mid-2008.) Listening to music will be a crucial component of the course, and the weekly listening assignments and tutorial discussions will prepare students for the works and styles they will encounter in the live performances.
