Close Encounters with Music in Melbourne
Close Encounters with Music in Melbourne will explore the formal concert culture of the Western classical tradition as it is currently practised in Melbourne. Students will be introduced to different styles of concert and theatre music, such as symphony and opera, chamber, choral and ballet music, through engagement with live local events. In addition to the weekly lecture and tutorial, students will have the opportunity to attend up to five performances and/or dress rehearsals as arranged by the course coordinators.
Guest lecturers holding management and artistic leadership roles in major performing arts organisations will provide ‘behind-the-scenes’ insights into the planning, development and production processes involved in the delivery of high-quality performances to audiences. Listening to music will be a crucial component of the course, and the weekly listening assignments and tutorial discussions will prepare students for the works and styles they will encounter in the live performances.
