Discovering Music
Can you imagine a day without music?
Music is an integral part of our everyday lives and we have all experienced its extraordinary power. Music can cheer us up, make us want to dance, or it can make us feel sad and even cry. You may have wondered how music does this, why a particular combination of sounds can have such a powerful effect; perhaps you wanted to talk about it and found yourself short of words.
This course will introduce you to the world of music. You will learn about its fundamental principles, its building blocks, and how they combine to produce different types of music. You will acquire a vocabulary for talking about music, and a set of tools and strategies to help you engage with it at a more profound level: you will become an active listener.
In both the lectures and the tutorials you will have the opportunity to discuss and actively listen to a broad range of examples taken from Western Art music from the Middle Ages to the present, film music, non-Western and popular musics of the world.
