Faculty of Music Governance

Board of the Faculty

The Board comprises distinguished members of various parts of the music profession, senior officers of the University, all full-time academic staff, and representatives of part-time teaching staff, of general staff, of graduates, of students, and of other parts of the University.  The Board meets twice a year to receive reports from all Faculty Committees, and exercises the overall authority for courses in the Faculty pursuant to Statute 5.1.

Executive Committee

Comprised of senior staff, this committee meets four times a year to approve routine and urgent business for the Faculty that arises between meetings of the Faculty Board, and to advise the Dean on matters of policy, staffing and financial management.  It also acts as the Departmental Committee for the department of music for the purposes of Council Resolution 6.13 pursuant to Statute 6.15.

Undergraduate Studies Committee

Comprised of teaching staff and a BMus student representative, this committee meets three times a year to approve, on behalf of Faculty, credit transfers, enrolment variations, leaves of absence, and a range of other routine student matters, and to assist Faculty with the development of all aspects of the undergraduate curriculum.

Graduate Studies Committee

Comprised of senior research staff and a postgraduate student representative, this committee meets three times a year to approve, on behalf of Faculty, applications for postgraduate candidacy, topics, courses and supervisors, variations of candidacy, and most other graduate student matters.  It also advises the Dean on allocation of research funds, tutorships, and the award of graduate scholarships, and assists Faculty with the development of all aspects of the graduate curriculum.

Library Users Committee

Comprised of library staff, academic staff and student representatives, this committee meets three times a year to discuss library policies, services and needs, and to assist the University Librarian with the development of library service for music.  For further information, contact Assoc Prof Murphy.

Progress Committee

This committee meets in July and December to review the progress of students enrolled in the undergraduate prograMs  It interviews students whose progress is judged unsatisfactory, approves for faculty the conditions on which such students may continue with their studies, and recommends to the Academic Board students who should be suspended from their courses.

Research Committee

Selection Committee

This committee meets as required in December–January to recommend to the University offers for the first year quota places, later years places and special entry sub quota.  It also assists Faculty in developing its selection principles and procedures.

Board of Examiners

Comprised of all First Examiners and chaired by the Chief Examiner.  The Board meets twice a year to approve on behalf of Faculty the annual honours class list, to determine exhibitions and prizes awarded by examination, and to determine the results in all undergraduate subjects.  It also awards supplementary and additional examinations and considers applications for special consideration.

Concerts Committee

Comprised of staff responsible for each major ensemble and assisted by student ensemble representatives, this committee meets twice a year to assist Faculty with the development and promotion of its public concert prograMs  The committee approves concert proposals and advises the Dean on the allocation of concert funds.
