Faculty of Music Scholarships, Prizes and Awards
The Faculty of Music offers a number of prizes and awards to both undergraduate and postgraduate students. Unless otherwise stated, the awards are for Australian resident students within the Faculty of Music and are based on examination results. Applications are not required unless otherwise indicated. The monetary values given are estimates and vary from year to year. For University Trusts, Resolutions governing the awards are listed in square brackets. These may by found in the Standing Resolutions of Council Chapter R.6.

Competitions
Albert H Maggs Composition Award
$6,000. Open to Australian composers whose efforts might cease for want of support. The award funds a commissioned work, and is advertised by national mailout to composers each March. Decided by a committee of composers. [R6.120]
Faculty Concerto and Aria Competition
Open to all instruments. $500 each in piano, strings and voice/wind/brass, to the Faculty students who give the best performances (12-20 minutes with piano orchestral reduction) of any concerto. Vocalists may perform the equivalent in concert arias. Competition is held annually in October with applications available from the Faculty Office in August.
Mozart Concerto Competition
Open to all instruments. $500 each in piano and an orchestral instrument to the Faculty students who give the best performances of the first movement of any Mozart concerto. Instruments with no Mozart Concerto should present the nearest equivalent. Competition is held once every two years in March (next in 2007) and judged by a visiting performer. Application forms available from the Faculty Office the previous November of a competition year.
Dorcas McClean Travelling Scholarship for Violinists
$30,000 to be used for advanced study, for a violinist under 25 years of age, resident in Australia for 2 years, and eligible for admission to a course of study in an approved institution and who gives an outstanding performance of a prescribed program. Competition is held at the Faculty once every two years (next in 2007) and judged by a panel of violinists. Application forms available from the Faculty early in each competition year. [R6.171]
Dorian Le Gallienne Composition Award
$500. Applications are called every two years in June (next in 2007). Awarded to a composer resident in Victoria, decided by a committee of composers. [R6.72(122)]
Faculty Chamber Music Prize
$800 for the chamber ensemble (of up to 8 players) of Faculty students that gives the best performance of two movements of a work from the chamber music repertory. There is also a prize of $100 for the Best Performance of a Contemporary Australian Work donated by Prof Brenton Broadstock. Competition held each October and judged by a visiting performer. Application forms available in June from the Faculty Office.
Hephzibah Menuhin Memorial Scholarship for Piano
Variable ($16,000 in 2004) for an Australian pianist who gives the outstanding performance at a competition held alternately in Melbourne and Sydney (Sydney in 2007) and judged by a panel of pianists. Administered alternately by the Faculty and the Sydney Conservatorium. Application forms available at the Faculty prior to each competition.
JS Bach Prize
Open to all instruments. $400 each in piano, strings and voice/wind/brass awarded to the Faculty students who give the best performances of a solo work by JS Bach of no longer that 10 minutes. Instruments with no Bach solo repertoire can play a Baroque solo work by another composer (as approved by the Faculty). Competition is held in August every two years (next in 2006). Application forms available in June of each competition year from the Faculty Office.

Allan Scholarship
$200 for a pianist wishing to study the BMus, preferably living within 50 miles of Horsham. Not necessarily awarded each year. [R6.158]
Bradford Scholarships
Variable. For music students as determined by the Dean.
CD Hume Violin Scholarship
$300 for a violinist entering the BMus or currently in it whose study would be interrupted without financial assistance. [R6.78]
Lady Turner Exhibition
$1,000 each for 5 students wishing to develop as solo performers. [R6.133]
Lady Turner Prizes
$55 in books for two students of outstanding promise. [R6.72(17)]
For Second Year BMus Students
Eric and Linda Jullyan Memorial
$380 for a student who has completed the first two years of the course and shows promise worthy of development.
Nellie Melba Prize
(Variable) For the best student in second year, currently of voice [formerly Conservatorium Students Loan Fund]. Donated by Dame Nellie Melba in 1902.
Wright Prize
$100 for a second year student demonstrating proficiency at the practical examination on an instrument determined by the Faculty. [R6.15] Ormond Exhibition

Allans Award
Musical scores for the final year pianist with the highest mark. Donated annually by Allans and Co.
Bergstrand Prize
$75 for fourth year student with the highest aggregate of marks in music education subjects.
Bertha Jorgensen Exhibition

Catherine Grace McWilliam Prize
$250 for the best final-year student. [R6.82]
Doris F Chandler Memorial Bursary
$1,900 for the pianist completing Music Performance 4 with a proposal for further studies. By a committee for Council. [R6.72(91)]
Florence Menk Meyer Prize
(Variable) For the most promising interpretation of works of Beethoven, Rubenstein, Chopin, Schumann, or Schubert by a pianist entering the fourth year. Administered by Equity Trustees.
Gwen Prokter Violoncello Prize

Peg Oldfield Prize

Pearis Rodger Scholarship
$4,800 payable over the duration of the course. Open to an undergraduate student outside the Faculty who has applied to study piano as their principal instrument in the music performance sequence, and is in financial need. Advertised within the Faculty. [R6.172]

E & D Rogowski Scholarship
$7000 for one or more BMus students of violoncello or saxophone.
For Musicology Students
Harold Clark English and Elizabeth English Scholarship
$200 for the best thesis on a musical subject by a student. [R6.72A(10)]
For Composition Students

Esther Rofe Award
$400. For a composer who is an Australian citizen.
Percy Grainger Prize
$250. Awarded for a Chamber Music Composition, open to currently enrolled students at the University of Melbourne. Compositions must be based on either a folksong collected by Percy Grainger or on a fragment or sketch of original music by Grainger.
For Music Education Students
Bergstrand Prize
$75 for fourth year student with the highest aggregate of marks in music education subjects.
Youth Music Foundation Lois Singer Award
Awarded to a student in the BMus/BTeach degree who has achieved at a high level in Practical Music 3, and demonstrated qualities of citizenship as demonstrated through participation in the Faculty’s ensemble activities.

Dublin Prize
$5,000 (approx) every five years for students and former students of the University for outstanding contributions in Art, Music, Literature or Science. [R6.72(3)]
HA Owen Memorial Scholarship
$300 for a deserving student. Donated annually by the Music Lovers Society.

Donovan Johnston Memorial Scholarship
$8,000. For a student, preferably a singer, under 30 to travel and study.
French History Research Higher Degree Scholarship
A travelling scholarship for overseas travel to France or elsewhere for academically justifiable research, valued at $1500. To be awarded annually to research higher degree students enrolled in the Faculty of Arts or Faculty of Music of the University of Melbourne who are studying an aspect of French History towards their degree. Lizette Bentwich Scholarship
$2,000 for graduates of the Music Faculty or the Arts Faculty alternately (Music Faculty next in 2009). Advertised biennially in January with a closing date at the end of March. [R6.98]

Melbourne Symphony Orchestra Travelling Scholarship
$12,000. For a player in the Orchestra to complete a study program abroad. Announced at the Orchestra every three years (next in 2006).
Nickson Travelling Scholarship
$2,000 for music or Arts graduate in music under 30 years of age from any Victorian University to study abroad. Next available 2006. Advertised in January with a closing date at the end of March. [R6.140]
Ormond Exhibition
$3,695 (variable each year) for the best postgraduate student not in receipt of other awards, to be used for research or postgraduate study. [R6.10]

Percy Jones Award

Postgraduate Scholarship
$5,000 (two awards). For postgraduate students of the Faculty. Provided by an anonymous donor. Awarded each year in February.
Sir William McKie Travelling Scholarship
$2,000. For a graduate of the Faculty to study in a London music school, offered once every two years (next in 2007). Advertised in January with a closing date in March. [R6.72(106)]
Welsford Smithers Travelling Scholarship
$20,000 for a BMus graduate wishing to continue studies overseas, offered once every two years (next in 2006). Advertised in January with a closing date at the end of March. [R6.153]Non-Faculty Awards
Eleanor and Joseph Wertheim Scholarship
Applications for the Eleanor and Joseph Wertheim Scholarship are currently open and will close this Friday 27 June, 2008. The main benefit of the Wertheim Scholarship is an annual allowance of approximately $20,000 for the normal duration of the course.
To be eligible to apply, students must be an unmarried female of at least 25 years of age, who is currently enrolled full-time as an undergraduate, graduate coursework or research student.
