b. Melbourne, Australia. Studied at the University of Melbourne, Queens College New York, and the City University of New York (PhD, 1983). He has taught at the Canberra School of Music, was Dean of Music at the University of Queensland, and has been Ormond Professor and Dean, Faculty of Music, University of Melbourne since 1991. He has conducted choirs and choral festivals throughout Australia. Editor of the Oxford Companion to Australian Music, A Dictionary of Australian Music and a contributor to the revised New Grove Dictionary of Music, he was also a member of the international Advisory Committee to Encyclopaedia Britannica. Winner of the 2005 University of Melbourne Teaching Excellence Award in the Humanities.
