Introduction to Gamelan Performance

Introduction to Gamelan Performance is a Masters level subject taught in intensive mode. It can be taken either as single‐subject enrolment (via the Community Access Program), or as part of the Master of Music Studies degree. No prior gamelan experience is required to undertake the subject.

The Gamelan (Indonesian orchestra) rehearses on a magnificent bronze slendro‐pelog gamelan from central Java, Indonesia. Students will learn to play the instruments of the gamelan leading to a short performance of a shadow puppet play (wayang); learn some aspects of the cultural context of gamelan music;  and will learn how to teach short forms of gamelan music (lancaran, ladrang and ketawang).

2 weekends: 15-16 and 29-30 August.
Classes will run from 9:00am to 4:00pm on each day.

Venue: 210 Berkeley Street.

Lecturer:  Ki Joko Susilo, an eighth‐generation dhalang (shadow puppet master) from Central Java who performs in English as well as traditional languages. Dr. Susilo has a degree in ethnomusicology from the University of Otago (www.gamelan.org/jokosusilo/index.html)
