Music Therapy

The music therapy course at the University of Melbourne was established in 1978, and was the first offered in Australia. It is also the largest music therapy course in Australia, with students studying at undergraduate and Graduate level.

Students in the undergraduate degree music therapy course study alongside those in the Masters in Music Therapy by Course Work. The curriculum is the same, and is offered on a 2-year cycle. Both courses lead to eligibility for Registration as a music therapist with the Australian Music Therapy Association. Graduate courses in music therapy research are also available, at Masters and PhD level.

The Faculty of Music has also established the National Music Therapy Research Unit (NAMTRU) in order to stimulate interest in research and post-graduate studies, thereby increasing our knowledge of music therapy, and advancing the profession in Australia.

Music Therapy Students' Society

The Melbourne University Music Therapy Students' Society (MMUTSS) was formed in 1979. The objectives of the Society are to encourage music therapy students in the pursuit of their studies, and to liaise between students and relevant organisations where music therapy is practised. The Society organises visits to these institutions and has guest speakers from them to address its meetings. Attendance at the MUMTSS is open to any person interested in music therapy.
