About the Centre for Studies in Australian Music (CSAM)

The Centre for Studies in Australian Music is associated with the Faculty of Music, University of Melbourne. Housed in a magnificent terrace house dating from 1888, it is located at 21 Royal Parade opposite the Grainger Museum and the Faculty of Music. The building incorporates the offices of 5 research and administrative staff, an office for a visiting composer or musicologist, and a library/seminar room.

The Centre was initiated in 1992 with aims to:

  • promote the scholarly study and understanding of music in Australia in all its diversity through seminars, courses and publications
  • design and conduct significant research projects in Australian music and
  • sharpen the focus on Australian music research by drawing together Faculty of Music staff, research students and financial resources.

Staff at the Centre collaborate on research projects with members of staff and postgraduates of the Faculty and conduct courses in Australian music as part of the university curriculum.

While the Centre is able to respond to straightforward research inquiries (involving up to 30 minutes research) without charge, it is also able to provide a commercial research service, undertaken by qualified musicologists, at a charge of $40 per hour.
