The Early Music Studio
Director: Prof. John Griffiths
The Early Music Studio is located in a restored terrace house at 27 Royal Parade, close to the Faculty of Music. Instrumental and vocal training in early music is provided by specialist staff at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The EMS includes teaching and rehearsal facilities and can also be used for seminars and small recitals. A large collection of early keyboards, strings, wind and brass instruments instruments are available for student use. The Klop chamber organ is available for public hire. One of the recent initiatives of the EMS has been the Spring Early Music Festival, now the leading festival of its kind in Melbourne.
Prof Griffiths, Assoc Prof Stockigt and Faculty of Music staff and students are also currently involved in several research projects on early music. More information can be found at Musicology Research Projects.
Jordi Savall, one of the greatest viola da gamba virtuosi of the modern era, is giving a concert at the EMS on 24 November.
