Spring Early Music Festival

A recent addition to EMS activities, the Spring Early Music Festival (SEMF) has become an annual event since 2005. The festival is the principal EMS contribution to musical life in Melbourne.

The 2007 Spring Early Music Festival celebrates of anniversaries of three milestones in the history of our culture

SPINACINO 500 The fifth centenary of the first printed lute music, Francesco Spinacino's Intavolatura di Lauto published by Ottaviano Petrucci in Venice in 1507.

ORFEO 400 The fourth centenary of the first performance of Claudio Monteverdi’s opera l'Orfeo, in Mantua in 1607, a work that  has become the foundation stone of the operatic tradition.

SCARLATTI 250 The 250th anniversary of the death of Domenico Scarlatti, one of the most significant innovators in keyboard music of the eighteenth century. Scarlatti’s music marked the beginnings of the piano tradition, and the powerful synergy of industrial technology and art
