 School of Music Style

Consistency of presentation is of great importance, particularly regarding the way you cite other publications, whether books, journals, music editions, recordings or web sites. Using a style guide is the best way of guaranteeing the consistency of presentation that is demanded of you. For most music subjects in the School of Music, the style guide to be used is:

  • The Chicago Manual of Style. 16th ed. Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 2010.
  • OR The Chicago Manual of Style. 15th ed. Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 2007.

This is available online via http://www.chicagomanualofstyle.org.ezp.lib.unimelb.edu.au/contents.html, and hard copies are available in the Bauillieu Library, and in the Music reference collection at Mu REF 808.027.

A useful summary of Chicago style can be found Chicago-Style Citation Quick Guide at http://www.chicagomanualofstyle.org.ezp.lib.unimelb.edu.au/tools_citationguide.html.

Please note: Music history subjects use the 'notes and bibliography' system summarised out at section 16.3, while ethnomusicology, psychology and other subjects normally use the author/date system described at 16.4. Students should confirm the appropriate referencing style with subject coordinators. The examples provided in this site are in the 'notes and bibliography' style.

The School of Music has recently changed from MLA style. For the remainder of 2010, both Chicago and MLA styles will be accepted, provided a single style is used consistently within a piece of work.
