 Interlibrary Loans

There are a number of tools for locating material in other libraries.

Books

Coolcat

The holdings of other Victorian university and research libraries are searchable via Coolcat (or follow the 'Search Other Libraries' link on the library catalogue main page.)

Kinetica

A combined search for books and music held in other Australian libraries can be done through Kinetica. This can be accessed via the telnet version of the University Library catalogue. You will need a password (available from the library), and to advise the type of terminal you are using (usually VT100). Select O for 'Other Libraries' then K for 'Kinetica'. You will then need to enter your name, and your library barcode.

A guide to Kinetica is available on the Library website in pdf and Word formats.

Warning: The rumour is that Kinetica lists a lot of books that don't actually exist! If you find a listing for a book you are after, cross-check it with the online catalogue of the holding institution. These can be accessed via the Australian Libraries Gateway.

WorldCat

WorldCat is an index of books and other materials in libraries worldwide. It is, however, heavily biased towards American libraries. It is a good way of identifying material that may be of interest, as well as locating specific items in overseas libraries.

It is available via Buddy, and uses your surname and library barcode as a password.

A gateway to the online catalogues of international research libraries can be found at

Serials

The main search tool for locating serials in Australian libraries is Serials in Australian Libraries (SIAL)!

This is available through Buddy and lists the serial holdings of Australian research libraries across all disciplines. A hard copy of the music-related serials held by Australian libraries in available in the catalogue area of the Music Branch Library.

A guide to SIAL is available on the Library website in pdf and Word formats.
