 Newspapers and the Musical Press

While the benefits of browsing through newspapers and periodicals should not be overlooked, a number of extremely useful indexes are available.

The Musical Press

The most important search tool for nineteenth-century music journalism is RIPM (Répertoire International de la Presse Musicale), provides highly annotated calendars, extensive keyword-in-context/author indexes and introductory studies of 65 music journals. It is available online through Buddy (a password is available for users outside the University computer network). The Library also holds hard copies of some volumes, but these are kept off-site and the online version is considerably more user friendly.

A guide to RIPM is available on the Library website in pdf and Word formats.

General Press (not music-specific)

The Baillieu Library holds the following newspaper indexes:

  • New York Times Index. 1913- UniM Baill MC 071.471 NEW
  • Palmers Index to the Times 1790-1905 CD-ROM Baillieu Library
A number of other indexes to the Times, covering later years, are also found in hardcopy in the Microform section of the library.
  • Le Monde Index 1980- UniM Baill MIC 074.36 MOND

The Times Digital Archive, a full-text, searchable online version of the London Times, is now available through Buddy.

A hard copy of the Union catalogue of international (vol 1) and Australian (vol 2) newspapers in Australian libraries is held behind the information desk in the Baillieu Library.
