While the benefits of browsing through newspapers and periodicals should not be overlooked, a number of extremely useful indexes are available. The Musical PressThe most important search tool for nineteenth-century music journalism is RIPM (Répertoire International de la Presse Musicale), provides highly annotated calendars, extensive keyword-in-context/author indexes and introductory studies of 65 music journals. The Library also holds hard copies of some volumes, but these are kept off-site and the online version is considerably more user friendly. A guide to RIPM is available on the Library website in pdf and Word formats. General Press (not music-specific)The Baillieu Library holds the following newspaper indexes:
The Times Digital Archive, a full-text, searchable online version of the London Times, is now available through Buddy. A hard copy of the Union catalogue of international (vol 1) and Australian (vol 2) newspapers in Australian libraries is held behind the information desk in the Baillieu Library. A useful listing of current newspapers around the world can be found at http://www.allnewspapers.com/.
