Scores of musical works are obviously of paramount interest to the Music Researcher. There are two main types of primary source material containing music notation: manuscipts and published editions. Different finding tools are available for these categories, and different conventions of documentation apply. While much postgraduate research will require a trip to the holding library to access manuscripts or rare early editions, an increasing amount of music is becoming available in facsimile editions, either in book form, on microform (microfilm or microfiche) or via the web.
